FAQ & Help
Frequently asked questions and troubleshooting help.
Getting Started
Q: What should I be doing right now?
Short version: follow missions → upgrade components (Miner first!) → join a faction → run dungeons → join a corporation for crafting. The full roadmap is in the Getting Started page, "So... What Do I Actually DO?".
Q: How do I get more targets?
You can find new targets by:
- Completing missions that reveal IPs
- Using Hex Map Packages from the shop
- Finding IP addresses in files on hacked systems
- Receiving tips from other players
Q: Why did my hack fail?
The target's trace time beat your crack time. This can happen because:
- Target is higher level than you
- Target has strong defensive components
- Your offensive components need upgrading
Gameplay
Q: How do I join a faction?
Open the Hex map (Nexus Control) and you'll be prompted to choose between the Syndicate and the Collective. This choice is important!
Q: Where do I find lore?
Lore fragments are hidden in files on hosts you hack. Check /var, /home, /etc, and other directories. Some appear only after completing certain missions.
Q: How does the Miner work?
Your Miner generates Bits passively over time. Higher Miner level = more Bits per hour. Remember to claim your Bits before the storage fills up!
Q: What are Nexus Keys for?
Nexus Keys are used to create links between hexes in Nexus Control. They drop from enemy Nexus nodes and are required to form Control Fields with your faction.
Modules & Crafting
Q: Why am I not dropping modules or materials?
Module and material drops are corp-gated: you must be in a corporation with an active research matching the drop. Without a corp you only find craft currency. See Modules & Fabricator.
Q: My module shows ▓▓▓ glitched lines — is it broken?
No — it's encrypted. Most dropped modules are. Use Decryption Keys from your inventory to reveal the affixes. Rarer modules cost more keys, and a corp Lab host gives everyone a discount.
Q: What does LICENSE REVOKED mean on my module?
That module was issued by your (ex?) corporation under a digital license, and staff revoked it. You keep the module, but it's inert — zero effects. Corporate DRM is ruthless.
Q: I saw SCHEMATIC DETECTED during a hack. What now?
A schematic file was planted somewhere on the target's filesystem. Crack the host, hunt down the .schematic file and copy it to your host BEFORE the trace completes. Then deliver it to your corp Warehouse.
Q: Why can't I socket my module?
Check three things: the component must be high enough level to unlock its socket, the module must match that component type (a Mining Chip won't fit a CPU), and the module must be decrypted first.
Q: My drops suddenly stopped. Bug?
Probably heat. Hacking at inhuman rates raises your heat level, which shrinks and eventually blocks ALL rewards — drops, bits, schematics. Slow down, take a break, let it cool.
